Our Sign Language Otter

Hello! I’m Sam, the friendly otter from Adventure Woods, and I’m here to show everyone that there are lots of wonderful ways to communicate.

I’m deaf and I communicate using British Sign Language (BSL). I love using my hands, facial expressions and body language to share stories, make friends and help everyone understand one another.

From saying “Hello”, “My name is Sam” and “Thank you”, to learning everyday words and phrases, we’ll make learning BSL fun, friendly and accessible for everyone.

🌳 Why BSL matters

At Adventure Woods, we believe everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to feel included.

Learning even a few signs can help us communicate with Deaf friends, family members and our wider community. Most importantly, it helps us build understanding, friendship and connection.

Our woodland is filled with friends who are wonderfully different, each with their own abilities, personalities, experiences and ways of seeing and experiencing the world.

🦦 Sam, our deaf Sign Language Otter, helps everyone discover the joy of British Sign Language (BSL) and shows us that communication can happen in many different ways.

🦡 Bailey, our blind woodland badger, explores Adventure Woods with confidence using his white mobility cane. Bailey reminds us that having a disability should never stop anyone from discovering, exploring and enjoying new adventures.

🦝 Pippa, our Posy Possum, sees the world differently — and she sees that difference as her superpower. A creative, curious and kind friend who uses a wheelchair, Pippa loves drawing, creating, collecting flowers and coming up with wonderful ideas. She reminds us that there is more than one way to go on an adventure.
